Who we are

History of Bethel Mekane Yesus Primary and Secondary School

Formally known as American Mission and Yehewot Berhan school is the oldest girls’ school in the country established in 1924 (1916 E.C), almost 100 years of educating girls created more opportunities and strong lifetime education to everyone who has attended the school.

As a result, BMYS alumni have served their country in various capacities and fields and are also represented throughout the world engaged in academia, public and private sectors, and international and non-governmental organizations.

• Recognizing the critical importance of education to nation building and personal development.

• Recalling that quality of education coupled with lifetime discipline and ethical standard are central to the foundation of BMYS; and

• Realizing that our collective action would make positive contribution to our former school.

Have hereby agreed to establish the ABYS Alumni Association in Ethiopia and North America.

Our name and this association are created to welcome everyone who has attended the school since 1924. The abbreviation for AYBS is derived from:

A - American Mission -1924(1916 E.C.) - 1977(1969 E.C.)

Y- Yehewot Berhan School - 1978(1970 E.C.) - 1996 (1989 E.C.)

B - Bethel Mekane Yesus - 1996 (1989 E.C.) – Current

S- School

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of AYBS’ alumni association is to create a lifelong and worldwide community of alumni through increased opportunities for engagement, awareness, participation, volunteer, and philanthropic commitments while creating sustainable connections. It will also provide a liaison between alumni of AYBS and current administration, staff, faculty and students of the school.

AYBS Alumni Association is an alumni association created by former students of ‘Bethel Mekane Yesus also formerly known as ‘American Mission’ and ‘Yehiwot Berhan School.

PURPOSE

The purposes of the Association are as follows:

To serve as a platform for former students with a view to re-establishing contacts and fellowship.
To liaise closely with the AYBS Alumni Association in Ethiopia and support as well as collaborate on mutually agreed projects.
To identify specific projects aimed at enhancing the quality of education and develop Alumni Visitors’ Program to share knowledge and experience with our former school.
